Udupi – In a disturbing case of betrayal and sexual assault, Udupi women’s police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly raping a young woman from Kolalgiri after misleading her with a false promise of marriage while secretly preparing to wed another woman.

The accused has been identified as Sanjay Karkera, a resident of Narnadugudde, Lakshminagar, in Kolalgiri village. Following his arrest, he was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.

Allegations and Incident:

As per the victim’s complaint, she and Sanjay were in a romantic relationship for the past two years. On July 11, 2024, she accompanied him on a trek to Kallase. During the outing, he allegedly offered her a juice that rendered her semi-conscious, after which he sexually assaulted her.

The complaint also reveals that Sanjay later took her to a temple in Sringeri, where he applied sindoor on her forehead and adorned her with a garland, symbolizing a mock marriage. He promised to convince his family for a formal wedding but continued to exploit her sexually, using the false assurance of eventual marriage.

Despite repeated delays and ongoing abuse, the victim later discovered that Sanjay was planning to marry someone else. She then approached the police.

The women’s police acted swiftly, arresting the accused, and the case is currently under thorough investigation.
