Udupi: The district police have activated six advanced speed radar cameras along various stretches of the national highway passing through the district in an effort to strengthen traffic enforcement and improve road safety. The newly installed surveillance systems have now become operational and will automatically detect traffic violations committed by motorists.
According to Udupi district Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, all violations identified by the radar systems will be monitored centrally from the district control room, and traffic challans related to offences will be sent to vehicle owners through post.
The move forms part of a broader initiative by the district police to improve compliance with traffic regulations and reduce accidents caused by unsafe driving practices on national highways.
Six locations covered in first phase
Police officials stated that the speed radar cameras have currently been installed at six locations across the district as part of the first phase of implementation.
The locations where the cameras have become operational include Doopadakatte in Karkala with a speed limit of 60 kmph, Uchila in Padubidri with a speed limit of 80 kmph, near Dandatheertha School in Kaup with a speed limit of 80 kmph, Thekkatte in Kota with a speed limit of 80 kmph, Trasi in Gangolli with a speed limit of 80 kmph, and Nayakanakatte in Byndoor where the speed limit has also been fixed at 80 kmph.
Officials said the locations were selected based on traffic movement and safety considerations along busy highway stretches.
Police authorities added that another 14 locations across the district have already been identified for the next phase of installation.
According to SP Hariram Shankar, the tender process for the additional installations has already been completed and work orders are expected to be issued shortly.
Multiple traffic violations to be detected
The newly installed radar system is designed not only to monitor vehicle speed but also to identify several other traffic violations automatically.
Police stated that apart from overspeeding, the system can detect triple riding, seat belt violations, riding without helmets, mobile phone usage while driving, wrong-side driving and other violations of traffic regulations.
The radar-based surveillance technology is expected to improve enforcement by enabling authorities to monitor multiple offences simultaneously.
Officials believe that the use of technology-driven monitoring systems will improve accountability among motorists and encourage better road discipline.
Violations to be monitored from control room
Police authorities said all violations recorded by the radar cameras would be monitored directly from the district control room.
After verification of offences, notices and challans will be issued and sent to vehicle owners through postal communication.
Officials stated that motorists receiving traffic notices can visit any police station in Udupi district and pay the prescribed penalty amount within seven days after receiving the challan.
The department clarified that the speed limits at all locations have been fixed in accordance with norms prescribed by highway traffic regulations and the National Highways Authority.
Initiative aims to improve road safety
Road safety officials have increasingly relied on surveillance-based enforcement systems to address rising concerns over speeding and negligent driving.
Authorities expect the initiative to strengthen enforcement mechanisms on major highway corridors and create greater awareness among road users regarding compliance with traffic regulations.
The implementation of additional radar camera systems is also expected to help reduce accidents linked to overspeeding and reckless driving while improving overall traffic management across the district.
