Udupi: A 26-year-old man has been detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act for his alleged involvement in multiple drug trafficking and drug consumption cases, police said.

The accused has been identified as Abdul Rouf, a resident of Doddanagudde under the jurisdiction of the Udupi City police station. The detention was carried out on May 19 following orders issued a day earlier by the Inspector General of Police, Western Range, Mangaluru, based on a report submitted by the Superintendent of Police of Udupi district.

The action was taken under preventive detention provisions aimed at curbing activities related to narcotics trafficking and preventing repeated offences.

Multiple cases registered against accused

According to police officials, multiple cases have been registered against the accused at different police stations in connection with alleged narcotics-related activities.

Authorities stated that cases against Abdul Rouf were registered at Manipal police station, Udupi City police station and Soladevanahalli police station.

Police records indicate that one drug trafficking and sale case each has been registered at the three police stations. In addition, two separate cases related to drug consumption were reportedly registered at Manipal police station.

Officials said the accused had come under police scrutiny based on repeated involvement in offences linked to narcotic substances.

Drug-related offences continue to remain an area of focus for law enforcement agencies, particularly with increasing efforts to monitor illegal trafficking networks and curb substance abuse activities.

Trafficking cases under trial

Police stated that the three cases related to trafficking and sale of narcotic substances are presently under trial before the court.

The judicial process concerning those cases is still underway and further proceedings will continue according to legal procedures.

Officials also said that the accused has already been convicted in the two separate drug consumption cases registered earlier.

Authorities indicated that the combination of pending cases and previous convictions formed part of the grounds considered while initiating preventive detention proceedings.

Preventive detention provisions are generally invoked in cases where authorities believe there is a need to prevent continued involvement in activities considered harmful to public order or safety.

Detention ordered under PIT NDPS Act

The Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act allows authorities to detain individuals preventively in specific circumstances linked to narcotics trafficking activities.

Police stated that detention orders were issued by the Inspector General of Police, Western Range, after examining the report submitted by the district police administration.

Following the issuance of orders, authorities took Abdul Rouf into custody on May 19.

The PIT NDPS Act is intended to prevent persons allegedly involved in illicit drug trade from continuing activities that may contribute to trafficking networks and related offences.

Law enforcement agencies have been increasingly relying on preventive legal measures to address repeat offenders and organised narcotics operations.

Accused shifted to Vijayapura Central Prison

Authorities have ordered that the accused be lodged at Vijayapura Central Prison under preventive detention provisions.

Police said the detention is part of broader efforts to strengthen action against narcotics-related offences and maintain public safety.

Law enforcement agencies across the state have been intensifying monitoring and enforcement measures against illegal drug circulation, particularly in districts where authorities have expressed concerns regarding narcotics activity.

Officials have reiterated that preventive actions and strict legal enforcement remain important tools in addressing the challenges associated with drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The latest action also reflects ongoing efforts by district police units to identify individuals allegedly involved in repeated narcotics offences and initiate appropriate legal procedures where necessary.
