Udupi – In a significant step toward improving public security, the Udupi district police, in association with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, have initiated a project to install 601 CCTV cameras at 207 strategic junctions across the district. The venture, estimated at ₹2.5 crore, will focus on border points, communally sensitive zones, and busy traffic areas, said Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar.
Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras will be deployed at locations such as Mala, Hosmar, Sacheripete, Sanur, Someshwar, Amasebail, Hosangadi, Dali, Meel Gangolli, Malpe Beach, and the Udupi city bus stand. High-definition units will also be placed at Kalsanka, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, the service bus stand, the old KSRTC bus stand, M Kodi junction, Kandluru Pete, Baradi, and Naravi. All live feeds will be monitored in real time from local police stations and the district control room.
In a parallel move to reduce crime, the district police are expanding their ‘Drishti’ night patrol program. Currently operating in 12 areas, the scheme will soon cover 21 additional locations. The patrol runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., deploying trained security guards in towns, markets, and other vulnerable areas to prevent theft, protect women, tackle drug offences, and safeguard isolated houses, businesses, and senior citizens.
Guards will promptly inform beat police or the district control room if any suspicious activity is detected, ensuring swift response and heightened vigilance.
