Udupi: Social worker, activist and political leader Veronica Cornelio has been honoured with the AICU Centenary Award 2026 for her contributions to community service by the All-India Catholic Union (AICU), described as Asia’s largest laity organisation.
The award was presented during the 107th AICU general body meeting held in Delhi on August 22. The honour includes a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs 25,000.
Cornelio was recognised for her long-standing contribution to social service and community welfare, along with her involvement in public life and politics.
Two decades of social service
Cornelio, who hails from Kemmannu, has been actively involved in social service for the past 20 years.
Alongside her political activities as a Congress worker, she has worked in various social and community initiatives, particularly those aimed at supporting people in need.
Her association with the Catholic Sabha has also been marked by efforts to improve access to healthcare for members of the community.
As a leader of the organisation, she played an important role in introducing health cards for the community. The initiative was aimed at helping people access better medical treatment, particularly those who required financial and other assistance for healthcare.
Her efforts to facilitate medical care for sick and needy people have been among the contributions recognised through the AICU award.
Contributions to local governance
Cornelio has also had an active role in local governance.
She served multiple terms as an elected member of the Kemmannu gram panchayat, representing her local community in grassroots administration.
She was also elected as a taluk panchayat member from the Uppoor and Padu Thonse electoral areas.
Her public service at the taluk level reached another milestone when she became one of the first women presidents of the Udupi taluk panchayat.
Her involvement in local governance provided her with an opportunity to work on issues affecting communities at the grassroots level.
The recognition from AICU comes in acknowledgement of her work across community service, local administration and public life.
Role in politics and public affairs
Apart from her social work, Cornelio has remained actively involved in politics.
She is an active Congress party worker and currently serves as a spokesperson of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
