Udupi: Facing an acute summer water crisis, authorities in Udupi district have begun supplying drinking water to residents in Kasamballi, Huligudde and Kajadi under the Shankaranarayana gram panchayat using an SLRM vehicle.
The emergency measure comes after traditional water sources, including wells and small ponds, dried up completely, leaving villagers without access to safe drinking water. The shortage has disrupted daily life and brought agricultural activities in the region to a standstill.
Wells run dry, agriculture affected
Residents of Kasamballi and nearby areas have long depended on open wells and local water bodies for their daily needs. However, with declining groundwater levels and an intense summer, these sources have failed this year.
The crisis has not only affected drinking water availability but also impacted farming and livestock. Many villagers have reportedly halted agricultural work due to lack of water, while cattle owners are struggling to meet basic water needs for their animals.
Locals said the situation this year is more severe compared to previous summers, highlighting the growing vulnerability of rural areas to seasonal water shortages.
Administration steps in after concerns raised
The issue recently gained attention following a media report that highlighted the worsening conditions in Kasamballi, where even drinking water had become scarce.
In response, local authorities initiated water supply through an SLRM (Solid Liquid Resource Management) vehicle to provide immediate relief. The vehicle is currently being used to transport and distribute water to affected households on a rotational basis.
Residents have welcomed the move but emphasised that it is only a temporary solution to a recurring problem.
Residents seek long-term solutions
Prakash Naik, a resident of the area, said that water scarcity has been a persistent issue every summer, but the intensity has increased this year.
He expressed gratitude for the administration’s prompt response but stressed the need for permanent measures. According to him, sustainable water management solutions are essential to prevent such crises in the future.
Villagers have called for improved infrastructure, better groundwater recharge mechanisms, and restoration of existing water systems to ensure year-round supply.
Plans to restore Jal Jeevan Mission supply
Officials have acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and assured residents of corrective steps. Panchayat Development Officer Mamata stated that efforts are underway to restore the pipeline under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
Once restored, the pipeline is expected to provide regular tap water supply to households in the affected areas, reducing dependence on temporary arrangements such as tanker or vehicle-based distribution.
Authorities are also likely to explore additional measures to strengthen water security in the region, especially during peak summer months.
Conclusion
The ongoing crisis in parts of Udupi district underscores the urgent need for sustainable water management in rural areas. While the current supply through vehicles offers short-term relief, long-term infrastructure and conservation efforts will be critical to addressing recurring shortages.
As climate patterns shift and demand for water increases, ensuring reliable access to drinking water remains a key challenge for local administrations and communities alike.
