Udupi: Welcoming the Karnataka Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held in Mangaluru on September 18, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has urged Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to take decisions on several key development demands concerning Udupi district.
Suvarna submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, outlining infrastructure, healthcare, education, fisheries, tourism, transport and other requirements of the district. He urged the government to consider the demands during the Cabinet meeting and provide necessary financial and administrative support.
Funds and staff sought for district hospital
One of the key demands raised by Suvarna concerns the Udupi district hospital.
The MLA urged the government to provide the required funds, medical equipment and adequate staff needed to complete the hospital and enable it to function on a full scale.
He also sought steps to make the hospital available for public service at the earliest.
According to Suvarna, ensuring the necessary infrastructure, equipment and manpower would enable the district hospital to provide healthcare services to people in Udupi and surrounding areas.
Agricultural, medical and engineering colleges
Suvarna also placed several demands concerning higher education and professional education infrastructure in the district.
He sought the establishment of an agricultural degree college in Udupi district and urged the government to sanction a government medical college.
The MLA also sought the establishment of a government engineering college, stating that such institutions would expand access to professional and technical education for students in the district.
The demands cover multiple fields of higher education and are intended to address the educational requirements of the growing population and student community.
Support sought for healthcare and fisheries
The MLA sought financial assistance for the management of the Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi.
He also urged the government to take measures to promote the fisheries sector, which remains an important economic activity in the coastal district.
Suvarna called for government support to strengthen the sector and address issues affecting fishermen and fisheries-related activities.
Another major concern raised in the memorandum was coastal erosion. He sought a permanent solution to erosion affecting various parts of Udupi district and urged the government to take appropriate long-term measures.
More grants for schools and disaster relief
Suvarna also sought increased grants for schools in the district to support educational infrastructure and related requirements.
He urged the government to provide financial assistance during natural calamities and drought conditions.
The MLA further sought individual compensation for houses damaged due to heavy rains, saying affected families should receive appropriate assistance.
With coastal areas frequently facing the impact of heavy rainfall and other weather-related events, the demands include both immediate financial support and measures aimed at improving disaster preparedness.
Tourism and sports infrastructure
Promotion of tourism was another demand included in the memorandum.
Suvarna urged the government to take measures to promote Udupi district as a tourism destination and support the development of facilities required to attract visitors.
He also sought greater encouragement for sports activities through the construction of well-equipped stadiums.
According to the memorandum, improved sports infrastructure would provide athletes and young people with better facilities for training and competitions.
Vacant government posts to be filled
Suvarna also highlighted the need to fill vacant posts in government departments.
He urged the government to appoint the required officers and staff so that departments can function effectively and ensure timely delivery of public services.
The MLA said adequate staffing is important for government departments to respond to public requirements and implement development programmes efficiently.
Better bus services for students
The memorandum also includes a demand for adequate government bus services for school and college students.
Suvarna urged the government to strengthen public transport connectivity so that students can travel conveniently to educational institutions, particularly in areas where existing services may be inadequate.
He also sought increased grants to various corporations and boards working in the district.
Urban development and Sri Krishna Corridor
Among the other demands, Suvarna sought the finalisation of the Udupi Urban Development Authority’s master plan.
He also urged the government to take measures for the development of the proposed Sri Krishna Corridor, which is intended to support the development of the area around Udupi’s major religious and tourism attractions.
The MLA said coordinated planning and timely government decisions would be necessary to take forward such development proposals.
Appeal ahead of Mangaluru Cabinet meeting
Describing the Cabinet meeting in coastal Karnataka as a significant occasion, Suvarna urged Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to consider the development requirements raised on behalf of Udupi district.
The September 18 Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru is expected to consider various proposals concerning coastal Karnataka. Suvarna has sought appropriate decisions on the demands included in his memorandum, particularly those relating to healthcare, education, infrastructure, fisheries, tourism, transport and public services.
He expressed hope that the government would take the requirements of the people of Udupi district into consideration while making decisions during the Mangaluru meeting.
