Udupi: A case has been registered at the Udupi Town Police Station against a youth for allegedly threatening a woman and extorting ₹14 lakh from her.

According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Sharath. The complaint was filed by Mahima (22), a resident of Marpalli, who alleged that the youth repeatedly demanded money from her on various pretexts.

Based on the complaint, the police have initiated a case and begun further investigation into the matter.

Money allegedly taken on various pretexts

According to the complaint filed with the police, Sharath had been taking money from Mahima over a period of time by claiming that he was facing several personal problems.

Each time the woman asked him to return the money, he reportedly avoided doing so by giving different excuses.

Police sources said the repeated financial demands gradually resulted in a large amount of money being transferred to the accused.

Threats allegedly issued in February

The complaint further states that in February 2026, Sharath allegedly contacted Mahima again and told her that his father was seriously ill.

He reportedly demanded ₹15 lakh from her, claiming he needed the money urgently for the situation.

When Mahima hesitated to give the amount, he allegedly abused her using foul language and issued serious threats.

According to the complaint, the accused warned that he would not spare her life if she refused to give him the money.

Woman forced to pay ₹14 lakh

Fearing for her safety, Mahima allegedly arranged and gave ₹14 lakh to the accused.

The complaint states that the money was handed over due to the threats and pressure created by the accused.

After the incident, the woman approached the Udupi Town Police Station and lodged a formal complaint regarding the alleged threats and extortion.

Police begin investigation

Following the complaint, police registered a case against the accused and initiated an investigation.

Officials said further inquiry is underway to verify the details of the financial transactions and circumstances surrounding the alleged threats.
