The Chandika bridge, a crucial link connecting several villages near Kumta, is facing serious safety concerns due to its deteriorating condition and inadequate safety measures. Over the past two months, the bridge has been the site of six tragic drowning incidents, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.
Situated near Uppinapattana on the Kumta-Shirasi National Highway, the bridge plays a vital role in facilitating travel for residents from various villages to Katgala and Kumta. However, during heavy rains and subsequent flooding caused by the Aganashini river, the bridge becomes impassable, significantly disrupting transportation and increasing the risk of accidents.
The deterioration of the bridge’s pillars due to repeated flooding has heightened fears about its structural integrity. Local gram panchayat member Mahesh Deshbhandari has voiced concerns about the potential for fatal accidents if protective measures are not implemented or if an alternative route is not established during adverse weather conditions.
In response to these pressing issues, local authorities have taken steps to address the situation. A formal request for the construction of a new bridge has been submitted to the Sub-Divisional Officer, supported by former Zilla Panchayat member Gajanana Pai. This request highlights the need for a more reliable and safer infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted connectivity and safeguard residents.
Deputy Commissioner Harish Kumar has confirmed that immediate action will be taken to mitigate the risks associated with the old bridge. Temporary safety measures, including the installation of warning signs and barriers, are being put in place to alert commuters and prevent accidents until the new bridge can be constructed.
Residents and commuters are being advised to exercise caution and avoid crossing the Chandika bridge during heavy rains and floods. Alternative routes are being recommended, and individuals are encouraged to wait until water levels recede before attempting to use the bridge. These precautions are crucial for ensuring the safety of all who travel through the area.
The construction of a new bridge is deemed essential for maintaining safe transportation in the region. The ongoing efforts to address the deteriorating condition of the Chandika bridge reflect the commitment of local authorities to protect public safety and prevent further tragedies related to this aging infrastructure.
Swift action is anticipated to address the issues surrounding the Chandika bridge, with the hope that a new, more secure bridge will soon be in place to support the transportation needs of the local community and ensure their safety during adverse weather conditions.
