Vijayapura police successfully stopped a planned greyhound race in Almel town, scheduled for December 12, after an intervention by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA). Meet Ashar, cruelty response legal adviser and associate director of PeTA India, reported spotting a promotional poster for the event on social media. Promptly, PeTA alerted the police via email, leading to the cancellation of the event.
Ashar highlighted the severe risks associated with greyhound racing, noting that dogs are forced to run at dangerously high speeds, often resulting in injuries or death. When not racing, they are confined to unsanitary kennels, facing neglect and abuse. Dogs that fail to perform may be abandoned or killed, further underscoring the cruelty behind such events.
“Greyhound racing prioritizes gambling over animal welfare, subjecting the animals to physical harm, exhaustion, and psychological trauma,” Ashar stated. He commended Jagadeesha HS, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vijayapura, for taking swift and decisive action to uphold the law and protect the animals.
The intervention serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance against events that exploit animals for entertainment, as organizations and authorities work to promote humane treatment and ethical practices.
