In a brazen robbery, Vijayapura witnessed a shocking incident where robbers intercepted a canter truck carrying cash. The driver and his assistant, who were returning home after selling cotton, were assaulted and robbed of Rs 32 lakh.
The money belonged to Chandrakanth Kumbar, a cotton trader from Jevargi in Kalaburagi district. The driver, Mahantesh Kumbar, and his assistant, Malli Kodachi, were transporting the money back to Jevargi after a cotton sale at a factory near Dharwad.
The robbers, traveling in a Bolero vehicle, targeted the canter near Kolhar in Vijayapura. They used iron rods and stones to smash the vehicle’s windows, forcing it to a halt. They then brutalized Mahantesh and Malli by throwing chili powder into their eyes.
After successfully stealing the Rs 32 lakh, the robbers fled the scene. Mahantesh and Malli sustained serious injuries during the attack and are currently receiving treatment at the Kolhar Primary Health Center.
Vijayapura District Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Bhagwan and other senior police officials rushed to the spot. The Kolhar police have registered a case and investigation is going on.
