Prajoth D’sa; singer by passion

Prajoth D’Sa from Udupi is a name that is making waves in the  Konkani music industry. This software engineer by profession, is a musician by passion and it is this passion of  his that is driving him to achieve big in the musical arena. And of course, opportunities are knocking his doors. News Karnataka caught up with him recently. Here are some excerpts of the interview.

When did you start singing?

I enjoyed singing right since my school days.  I used to take part in singing competitions and win prizes. I  was a part of church choir since childhood. That’s where the music in me grew. Later in high school I learnt keyboard on my own. I performed for the first time on a public stage during Udupi Red Cross Utsav while I was in Class X. It’s here that my confidence boosted up. Whenever I used to see Konkani albums in  shops,  I always nurtured a desire of seeing my  picture  on the cover some day. I got a first break in a Konkani album in 2010.  Since then I have never looked back.

Is singing  your hobby or did you ever thought of making it your career?

I can say I am a software engineer by profession and a singer by passion. It has always been my hobby juggling between both my interests. If music is going to  help me significantly,   maybe I would think of taking it up as a career in future. But for now I would like to manage both side by side.

What are your immediate plans ?

Currently, I am working on a  Konkani album which would be a promising modern approach to Konkani music where I’ve introduced styles like rock, jazz, ballad, classical fusion, dub step, hip hop etc keeping in mind the Konkani essence. The album is “Udi Udi”.

If  you have to  choose between your profession and passion, then what would you choose?

Music has always been a part of me. Juggling between profession and passion was once a daunting task until I got a studio setup of my own at home. So I can say I’m good with both at the moment. I will certain choose my passion any day if given a choice.

Heard that you  have got a chance to sing for Bollywood. Could you please explain about it?

Oh Yes. As you know I have this habit of sharing my covers and tracks online. This was noticed by a Bengali Director who is doing a Bollywood movie soon. I showed him one of my compositions. Luckily that suited the plot and  what he was looking for. That’s how my song got into his movie.

Who are your idols?

KK, Sonu Nigam and Kishore Kumar.

Who has been your pillar of strength?

My parents supported me in whatever I wanted to do. Even my  friends have been very supportive  by making me upload stuffs on the internet and that got me loyal listeners all around the world.
