Mother-son duo trains women to defend themselves

Belman: For the safety of the school and college girls in response to the increasing cases of various kinds of violence, this mother-son duo has made use of Martial arts.

Shobhalatha, a resident of Kateel initiated a unique programme self-defence training through her son who is a karate instructor and a graduate.

Martial artist Karthik S Kateel with his mother’s support and father Prof Suresh Kateel’s encouragement takes classes for school and college girls in the presence of teachers.

Karthik began learning Karate at the age of 6 from Ishwar Kateel. At the age of 14 he got inspiration from Black belt martial arts legends like Bruce lee, Tony jaa, Jackie chan, Scott adkins, Jaitley and learnt taekwondo, mu attay and jiu-jitsu through the Internet. He trains the girls in a variety of Karate kicks such as confuse kicks, guyver kick, butterfly kick, aerial eagle kick.

He has taken classes for more than 10,000 girl students in above 50 colleges and schools in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in the presence of his mother. While he collects the travelling expenses from the students and he takes the classes for free.

Karthik has represented Karnataka 16 times and 6 times at the national level. He has won several gold medals, a first prize in powerpoint presentation at a state level seminar, other medals in papercraft, volleyball, essay competitions, and debates. Various associations have felicitated this talented karate trainer.

He was awarded with Mangalore Ekalavya Stunt, Karate Kali Karate Karthik award and many other titles for his achievement. Programmes related to Karthik were telecast on Akashvani and Doordarshan.

The increasing incidents of crime against women has made training in self-defence the need of the hour. That’s why young girls as well the grown-up ones are taking lessons in different styles of martial arts. Karthik has made the dream come true of many parents who want their daughters, trained in self-defence and giving martial arts training is the only option to keep them safe.

The initiative taken by mother-son duo has been appreciated by all in this today’s increasingly violent world.
