WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam Spreading Malware and Stealing Personal Data
A new WhatsApp scam is targeting users during the wedding season, with fraudsters sending fake wedding invitations containing malicious links. The scam involves scammers sharing APK files disguised as wedding invitations, which, when clicked, can install harmful malware or steal sensitive personal and financial information.
A recent case in Rajasthan saw a victim lose Rs 4.5 lakh after opening a wedding invitation sent from an unknown number. The attached malicious PDF contained malware that gave cybercriminals access to the victim’s bank account information. Police departments in several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, have issued warnings about this scam. Gujarat Police, through social media, cautioned citizens saying, “Fake wedding cards coming on WhatsApp are emptying bank accounts… The APK file gets auto-installed in the device and your device is hacked.”
How the Scam Works
Victims receive a seemingly legitimate wedding invitation via WhatsApp, which includes a link. Clicking the link redirects users to a malicious website that either installs malware or steals valuable personal details, such as bank account credentials and passwords. The fraudsters distribute these malicious APK files through WhatsApp, email, and other messaging platforms.
How to Stay Safe
To avoid falling for this scam, users should:
- Verify the sender: Be cautious of messages from unknown numbers or suspicious senders.
- Avoid suspicious links: Never click on links from unknown sources or those that seem too good to be true.
- Keep your software updated: Ensure your device’s operating system and security software are up to date.
- Use strong passwords: Use unique, strong passwords for your online accounts.
- Enable two-factor authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
- Report suspicious activity: If you receive a suspicious message or experience unusual activity, report it to local authorities.
