A remarkable act of presence of mind by a 12-year-old boy in England has drawn widespread praise after he saved his mother’s life when she collapsed while driving at high speed.

Split-second decision on a busy road

Zac Howells was travelling with his mother, Nicola, when she suddenly lost consciousness while driving at around 60 mph on the A40 near Ross-on-Wye. With her foot still pressing the accelerator, the car began to speed up. Acting instinctively, Zac grabbed the steering wheel, slowed the vehicle and brought it to a stop against a barrier, preventing a potentially fatal crash.

Calm call that made all the difference

Once the car was stationary, Zac switched off the engine and used a phone to contact emergency services. An audio clip later released by West Mercia Police captured his remarkable composure as he calmly explained the situation and gave precise location details — even clarifying that they were close to the Wales border.

“I’m really scared,” Zac can be heard saying, while clearly outlining what had happened and following instructions from call-handlers.

Comforting his mother

As Nicola regained consciousness, Zac immediately focused on reassuring her, holding her hand and encouraging her to breathe. His calm words — telling her everything would be fine — highlighted maturity far beyond his years.

Recognition for bravery

Zac has since been awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation for his bravery. He visited police headquarters in Worcester, where he met the officers and call-handlers who responded that day.

Nicola later said she was “immensely proud” of her son and grateful for the support shown to him. The pair had been travelling from Wales to the Birmingham Christmas market when the incident occurred.

The story has resonated widely, serving as a powerful reminder that heroism can emerge in the most unexpected moments — sometimes from the youngest among us.
