A heartbreaking incident in the United States has brought renewed attention to the dangers of viral social media trends, after a nine-year-old girl lost her life while attempting a so-called “blackout challenge”.
JackLynn Kaye Blackwell, from Texas, was found unconscious with a cord around her neck on February 3. Despite desperate efforts by her father to revive her, she could not be saved.
Tragic outcome of a dangerous trend
The “blackout” or “choking” challenge involves participants intentionally restricting oxygen to the brain until they pass out. Experts have repeatedly warned that such acts can lead to fatal consequences within minutes.
According to her family, JackLynn had come across a video of the challenge online. Though she had earlier been advised by her grandmother never to attempt it, the young girl reportedly tried it while playing outside her home.
Her father, Curtis Blackwell, described the moment he found her as deeply traumatic. He attempted CPR until emergency responders arrived, but the lack of oxygen had already caused irreversible damage.

Born in Stephenville, JackLynn was described as a cheerful and creative child who enjoyed drawing, painting, puzzles, and cycling. Her sudden death has left her family and community in profound grief.

They emphasised that even seemingly harmless content can quickly lead children to risky or harmful videos. “It’s not a joke, it’s not a game, it’s life and death,” her father said, urging parents to remain vigilant.
