Forbach: A 35-year-old man carrying a knife was arrested after entering a church in the northern French city of Forbach and repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar”, prompting concern among local residents and church authorities.
Teenagers raise the alarm
The incident occurred at Saint-Rémy Church, where the man reportedly appeared to be looking for the parish priest. Two 14-year-old teenagers heard his shouts and alerted their parents, who contacted the police. Officers subsequently entered the church and detained the man.
Police found an Opinel-type knife in his possession, although authorities said the weapon was not brandished and there was no report of anyone being injured. A small quantity of cannabis was also reportedly found.
The man, who was born in 1991 in the former Yugoslavia, was taken into police custody. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding his actions, including his religious background and psychological state.
Investigation continues
French authorities have not established a terrorist motive in the incident. The suspect was reportedly not known to intelligence services as a terrorism concern, while his previous criminal record did not include offences linked to terrorism or threats against state interests.
Local officials praised the teenagers for their alertness and the prompt police response. The incident has nevertheless renewed attention to security around Christian places of worship in France, where churches have previously been targeted in serious acts of violence.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the man’s intentions and circumstances. The case also comes ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s planned visit to Metz later this month.
