Kathmandu: In a recent development, the government of Nepal has officially decided to ban the popular short-video platform TikTok. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting, and while the effective date of the ban remains unclear, it is expected to be implemented soon.
The government cited concerns over TikTok’s role in fostering hate speech as a primary reason for the ban. According to reports, a significant portion of Nepalese society has criticized the platform for its alleged contribution to the proliferation of hate speech.
As the ban is poised to take effect, it reflects a growing trend of governments worldwide scrutinizing and sometimes imposing restrictions on social media platforms to address concerns related to content and user behavior.
