Astronaut Sunita Williams’ Return To Earth Delayed Again. What NASA Said

Sunita Williams

Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams’ return to Earth aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft has been postponed once again due to a series of technical issues. Originally scheduled to return on June 14 after a week in space, her return was first delayed to June 26, and a new return date has not yet been announced by NASA.

According to reports, NASA extended Williams’ stay on the International Space Station (ISS) after the Starliner experienced five helium leaks and encountered problems with five of its 28 thrusters. A minimum of 14 thrusters is required for a safe return. Williams, along with her crewmate Butch Wilmore, remains safe aboard the ISS, which serves as a research hub for astronauts from multiple space agencies.

NASA stated that it is following its standard mission management procedures and is evaluating future return opportunities after a planned spacewalk on July 2. The agency emphasized that the Starliner is currently prepared for an emergency return if needed.

Prior to her departure, Williams faced multiple delays in launching the Starliner spacecraft. Upon arrival at the ISS on June 7, she notably celebrated by dancing. While she has praised the Starliner as a “fantastic spacecraft,” whistleblowers have accused Boeing and NASA of neglecting known technical issues to avoid further delays. To date, 20 whistleblowers have raised concerns about NASA’s handling of these issues.

Boeing, meanwhile, has faced allegations of technical failures with its aircraft, further complicating the scrutiny over its space endeavors.
