An 11-year-old autistic boy from Peterborough is traveling over 100 miles to deliver homemade pies to Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks, whose van containing 2,500 pies was stolen and damaged. The pies, valued at £25,000, were meant for York’s St Nicholas Fair but were ruined when the refrigerated van was taken from a business park in Melmerby.
After hearing about the incident, Joshie Harris, who is non-verbal, decided to bake a batch of replacement pies with his father, Dan. Despite his communication challenges, Joshie expressed his understanding of the situation by typing on his iPad, “I see sad man, pies finished,” showing his empathy.
Joshie and Dan are traveling to York this weekend to deliver the pies, which include similar flavors to those lost. If Tommy Banks cannot use all of the pies, the surplus will be donated to a food bank. Dan Harris shared that Joshie’s act of kindness highlights how, even without speech, his son contributes to society in meaningful ways.
Joshie’s gesture not only showcases his love for cooking but also his desire to spread goodwill, especially during the holiday season. His father emphasized that Joshie’s actions demonstrate the importance of helping others, regardless of one’s ability to communicate in traditional ways.
