Dhaka: Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin is likely to resign nearly two years before the completion of his five-year term, according to multiple media reports and political sources. However, there has been no official confirmation from the President’s office, and senior government leaders have urged caution, describing the reports as speculation for now.
The reports have fuelled political speculation in Bangladesh, where Shahabuddin remains the only top constitutional office-holder from before the mass uprising that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024.
Reports suggest resignation may be imminent
According to political sources quoted by several Bangladeshi media outlets, Shahabuddin is expected to step down in the coming days, although no official announcement has been made.
A senior leader of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) told PTI that the President was “likely to resign soon” but did not elaborate on the reasons. Reports also suggest that the government has become increasingly uncomfortable with Shahabuddin continuing in office.
Alleged contact with Sheikh Hasina under scrutiny
Media reports claim that one of the factors behind the speculation is Shahabuddin’s alleged telephone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit to London for medical treatment earlier this year.
Hasina has been living in India since she was ousted from power following the 2024 student-led uprising. According to the reports, intelligence agencies later became aware of the alleged conversation, prompting fresh discussions over Shahabuddin’s future. However, political sources have indicated that the matter is “more complex” than a single incident.
Government says reports remain rumours
Despite the widespread speculation, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said there is no official confirmation of the President’s resignation.
Responding to questions from reporters, the minister said the government would only take a position if the resignation became an actual development.
He also explained that, under Bangladesh’s Constitution, if the President wishes to resign, the resignation letter must be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, after which constitutional procedures would be followed.
What happens if Shahabuddin resigns?
Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the Speaker of Parliament would assume the role of Acting President until a new President is elected.
The President’s office in Bangladesh is largely ceremonial, but it plays an important constitutional role during periods of political transition and government formation.
Political uncertainty continues
Shahabuddin was elected President in April 2023 by the previous Parliament. Following the political upheaval of 2024, he became the only senior constitutional office-holder to remain in his position.
Although reports of his resignation have gathered momentum, there has been no formal statement from Bangabhaban, the President’s official residence, or the government confirming that he has decided to step down. Until such confirmation is issued, the reports remain unverified.
