Dhaka, August 12 : In recent statements, Md Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Advisor to Bangladesh‘s interim government, underscored the importance of balancing diplomatic relations with major global powers. According to the Dhaka Tribune, Hossain highlighted that maintaining good relations with all countries is a key focus for the new administration. “We want to keep good relations with all. We need to maintain a balance of relations with the big countries,” he was quoted as saying.
Hossain also outlined the interim government’s primary focus on restoring law and order within the country. He stated that once stability is achieved, attention would turn to addressing other pressing issues. The restoration of law and order is seen as a crucial step before tackling additional challenges facing the country.
On the international front, the United States has expressed hope that the new interim government in Bangladesh will set the stage for a democratic future. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller indicated that the US has been in communication with the interim administration, including the recent swearing-in of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus as the country’s chief advisor. Miller noted that the US charged affairs attended Yunus’s swearing-in, and emphasized that the US wishes to see the interim government lead Bangladesh towards a democratic future.
Professor Muhammad Yunus now faces significant tasks as chief advisor, including restoring peace and preparing the country for forthcoming elections. Yunus, who was recently acquitted of charges related to the misappropriation of funds from the Grameen Telecom Workers and Employees Welfare Fund, also faced previous legal challenges related to labour law violations. His acquittal has been a notable development as he steps into his new role.
As Bangladesh navigates this transitional period, the interim government’s focus on balancing international relations and restoring internal stability will be crucial for the country’s future. The international community, particularly the United States, is closely watching the interim administration’s actions and its commitment to democratic principles.
