At least three people, including a one-year-old baby, have died, 16 others are injured, and nine remain missing after a boat capsized on the Amazon River in northern Brazil.
The boat, named “M. Monteiro,” was carrying over 200 passengers when it caught fire following an explosion on Monday near Uarini in Amazonas state, according to Xinhua news agency. Despite the tragedy, 183 people survived the incident, as confirmed by police and the Navy.
The vessel had departed Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, on Saturday, heading towards Tabatinga, a city on Brazil’s border with Colombia and Peru. This incident marks the second passenger boat fire in Amazonas within three days.
On Saturday, the “Comandante Souza III” also capsized after a fire, resulting in four deaths and five people missing.
