New York: The Indian-American community in the Boston area is preparing to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day with the 5th International India Day Parade on August 9, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage and the growing friendship between India and the United States.
Organised by the Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA)-New England, the event is regarded as one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the New England region. This year’s theme, “Festival of Freedom & US-India Friendship,” highlights the shared democratic values and enduring partnership between the two nations.
Parade to showcase India’s vibrant culture
The celebrations will feature 15 colourful floats and tableaux, cultural performances, a flag-hoisting ceremony, and participation from community organisations, veterans, first responders and thousands of Indian-Americans from across New England.
Visitors will also enjoy performances by renowned dance and music groups, exhibitions by community and non-profit organisations, a vendor marketplace, and a Festival of Indian Cuisine offering a variety of authentic Indian dishes.
India-US friendship takes centre stage
The parade’s Grand Marshals will be Colonel Inder Preet Singh, a decorated military veteran, and US Navy Intelligence Specialist Maggie Lehman, who will be honoured for their service and dedication.
The event’s Chief Guest will be Raghuram Sastry, the first Consul General of India in Boston, symbolising a significant milestone in strengthening India-US ties and supporting the growing Indian-American community.
Organisers also welcomed Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s proclamation declaring August 15, 2026, as “India Day” in the state for the fifth consecutive year, recognising the contributions of the Indian-American community.
The celebration is expected to bring together thousands of people in a vibrant display of patriotism, cultural pride and the enduring bond between India and the United States.
