Feline escapes with minor injuries after freak household accident
A mischievous pet cat in eastern China has narrowly escaped death after accidentally getting trapped inside a running washing machine, spending more than 10 minutes tumbling inside the drum before being discovered by its owner.
The cat, named Jintiao, somehow climbed into the washing machine while it was operating. Despite the frightening ordeal, the feline survived with only a red, irritated nose and soaked fur, according to reports shared by the South China Morning Post.
Incident goes viral online
The shocking moment was captured on video and uploaded by the cat’s owner, known on Douyin as @jiemodaxiaojie, on December 5. The clip quickly went viral, garnering over 217,000 likes and nearly 20,000 comments.
In the footage, Jintiao can be seen stumbling out of the washing machine, drenched and shivering, while the visibly shaken owner hesitates to touch the cat, fearing that sudden movement might worsen internal injuries.
Two days later, follow-up videos showed a fully recovered and energetic Jintiao, pawing playfully at the camera as if nothing had happened.
Mixed reactions from netizens
The viral clip sparked intense debate online. Many viewers expressed horror and disbelief, while others sharply criticised the owner for alleged negligence.
Several users questioned why the washing machine drum was not checked beforehand or why the cat was not rushed to a veterinarian immediately. Others, however, were more sympathetic, acknowledging that panic and fear can delay decisions in such moments.
Some commenters shared practical safety tips, urging pet owners to always check appliances like washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators before use, especially in homes with curious animals.
Owner defends her actions
Responding to the criticism, Jintiao’s owner said she chose not to move the cat immediately out of concern that handling him too quickly could aggravate unseen injuries. She maintained that her priority was to ensure the cat stabilised before any further action.
The incident also revived memories of similar accidents reported in the region, where pets were not as fortunate and suffered serious or fatal internal injuries.
A cautionary tale for pet owners
While Jintiao’s survival has been widely described as miraculous, animal welfare experts say the incident is a stark reminder of how quickly household appliances can become dangerous for pets.
For the internet, the episode has become both a heart-stopping warning and a source of meme-driven humour. For pet owners, it carries a simpler message: always check before you switch on.
Jintiao, now back to his playful self, appears to have used up at least one of his nine lives — and hopefully learned to stay far away from the spin cycle.
