BANGKOK: A tragic shooting in Thailand’s troubled southern region has claimed the lives of three people, including a child, with police confirming the incident on Saturday. The deadly attack took place late Friday in a neighborhood within Tak Bai district of Narathiwat province, one of three predominantly Muslim provinces grappling with a long-standing separatist conflict.
Authorities reported that a nine-year-old girl and a 75-year-old man were among the deceased. According to local police officer Watthana Thurarat, one victim died instantly, while two others succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Two more people sustained injuries during the incident.
Investigators suspect the assailant is affiliated with a militant separatist faction, though the shooter has yet to be apprehended. While unrest is frequent in Narathiwat, attacks in residential zones targeting civilians remain relatively infrequent, as most assaults typically focus on government forces.
The southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala have been engulfed in a conflict since 2004, with over 7,000 casualties linked to the insurgency seeking greater autonomy for the region’s Muslim population in a largely Buddhist nation.
The area has a dark history. In 2004, the Tak Bai massacre saw seven protesters shot by Thai forces, followed by 78 detainees suffocating in military transport vehicles — a tragedy that deepened mistrust and fueled rebellion. The case was recently closed by Thai courts due to the statute of limitations, a decision that analysts warn could further heighten regional tensions.
