Beijing is standing firm amid intensifying economic pressure from the United States, as President Donald Trump sharply raises tariffs on Chinese imports to a staggering 125%. In response, China warned that Washington’s actions defy global consensus and disrupt the world economy.
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, criticized the latest tariff hike, saying it “undermines the foundation of global trade and destabilizes international economic systems.” The ministry condemned the US move as a direct challenge to the global order.
Commerce Ministry representative He Yongqian called for a balanced resolution, urging the US to “meet halfway.” He stressed that China remains open to dialogue, but insisted any negotiations must be grounded in “mutual respect and equality.” At the same time, he reaffirmed China’s determination to retaliate if talks fail.
Following the US hike, China imposed 84% tariffs on American goods, signaling it would not hesitate to match Washington’s aggressive stance. Beijing has repeatedly emphasized its willingness to “fight to the end” in the ongoing trade conflict.
Although Trump hinted that a trade deal with China remains possible, his administration is now pivoting toward negotiations with nations like Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea.
In a strategic shift, China has initiated talks with the EU and Malaysia to strengthen trade ties, while Australia has declined to join forces with Beijing. Meanwhile, Chinese stocks showed resilience on hopes of domestic policy support, even as the yuan dropped to its lowest level since 2008.
