A three-year-old girl from eastern China has become a national sensation after her unexpected Caucasian-like features captured widespread attention online. Despite both parents being Chinese, the toddler—nicknamed Guojiang (“jam”)—has blonde curly hair, blue eyes and long eyelashes, sparking nationwide curiosity. The story, first reported by Haibao News, has racked up over 120 million views on mainland social media.

Parents puzzled, DNA tests offer clarity

Born in May 2022 in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, Guojiang initially appeared like any other Chinese newborn. But at eight months, her eyes turned blue, and by her first birthday her Caucasian traits became unmistakable. Concerned, her parents even wondered whether the hospital had accidentally swapped their baby.

Multiple DNA tests, however, confirmed she was indeed their biological child.

Upon tracing family history, the couple discovered that Guojiang’s paternal great-grandfather was Russian, who had settled in China after marrying a woman from Henan. He died in 1985, but his recessive genes appear to have resurfaced after generations.

‘Recessive genes awakened in a girl’

Guojiang’s father, surnamed Yang, explained that male births have dominated his family line and none showed any mixed-heritage traits.

“The recessive genes from my great-grandfather seem inactive in males but expressed fully in my daughter,” he said.

A science blogger, Lao Ren, noted that features like blonde hair and blue eyes come from recessive genes, which may remain unexpressed for generations until the right combination appears—often more visibly in female children.

Viral curiosity and a mother’s calm

The girl’s foreign-looking appearance has drawn intense public interest. The family says they often face questions from strangers while out in public, and although amused at times, the repeated explanations have become tiring.

Since September, Guojiang has been attending kindergarten, speaks fluent Chinese, and is described as cheerful and friendly.

Her mother remains unfazed by the attention:
“Physical traits are determined by genes. I don’t place importance on appearance. I just want her to grow up healthy, happy and useful to society.”

Online reactions have been overwhelmingly affectionate, with users calling her “beautiful,” “unique,” and “a remarkable example of family genetics.”
