Los Angeles: Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Chuck Russell, best known for directing the 1994 superhero comedy The Mask, has died at the age of 74. According to reports, Russell passed away unexpectedly in San Diego on July 22, though the cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Russell earned recognition as a director, screenwriter and producer, delivering several memorable films across the horror, action and comedy genres.
A filmmaker behind iconic Hollywood hits
Russell gained international acclaim with The Mask (1994), starring Jim Carrey, a film that became a global box-office success and remains one of the most celebrated comedy films of the 1990s.
His notable works also include A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), The Blob (1988), Eraser (1996), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and The Scorpion King (2002).
His final directorial venture was Witchboard (2024), a remake of the 1986 supernatural horror film of the same name.
Jim Carrey pays heartfelt tribute
Actor Jim Carrey, who played the lead role in The Mask, remembered Russell as a filmmaker who created a joyful and inspiring atmosphere on set.
“I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who during the shooting of The Mask, created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set,” Carrey said in a statement.
He added that The Mask remains “one of the jewels” of his creative life and thanked Russell for the lasting memories.
