In a bold intelligence initiative, the CIA has released Chinese-language videos to persuade dissatisfied Chinese officials to leak classified information to the United States. The campaign, which is part of a broader recruitment drive, aims to penetrate the Chinese Communist Party’s inner ranks by appealing to personal and political frustrations.
Two dramatized clips, titled “Why I Contacted CIA: To Take Control of My Fate” and “Why I Contacted CIA: For a Better Life,” were shared on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. They depict fictional officials growing disillusioned with China’s political hierarchy and choosing to contact the CIA to secure a better future for themselves and their families. One scene shows a man stating in Mandarin, “As I rise within the party, I watch those above me being discarded like worn-out shoes.” He concludes, “My family’s fate cannot rest in their hands,” before digitally contacting the agency.
The videos end with CIA branding and dark web contact instructions, reflecting a targeted psychological and digital outreach campaign first launched in October. The CIA claims the messaging is successfully reaching beyond China’s stringent internet censorship.
“This wouldn’t continue if it weren’t effective,” a CIA official told Reuters. Director John Ratcliffe reinforced the urgency, calling the Chinese Communist Party the most formidable US adversary and stressing the agency’s evolving methods to combat global threats.
Beijing has yet to officially comment, though it has previously accused the US of orchestrating disinformation efforts against China.
