Colombian regional music star Yeison Jiménez died in a tragic plane crash shortly after take-off in the Paipa area of Boyacá on Saturday, according to local authorities and media reports. Five other people on board the small charter aircraft were also killed, officials said.
The crash occurred moments after the aircraft departed from Paipa airport. Early reports indicate that the plane failed to gain sufficient altitude, went down near the end of the runway, and crashed into a nearby field, where it caught fire. Emergency response teams rushed to the site, but there were no survivors.
A video circulating on social media, shared by Rapid Report, showed the aircraft on the runway just moments before the crash.
Returning from a performance
Jiménez, whose full name was Yeison Orlando Jiménez Galeano, was 34 years old. He was reportedly returning from a performance in Boyacá and travelling to Medellín, from where he was scheduled to continue to Marinilla for another show later the same day.
While officials have not yet released a complete list of victims, local reports say those travelling with Jiménez were members of his music team, including fellow musicians and crew.
A major loss to Colombian music
Originally from Manzanares in the Caldas department, Jiménez was among the most popular artists in Colombia’s regional and popular music scene. Known for his emotionally charged lyrics and strong bond with fans, his songs had garnered millions of views across digital platforms.
Tributes poured in soon after news of his death broke. A Colombian journalist wrote on X, “Tragic. Sources confirm the passing of Yeison Jiménez, a great artist of popular music in Colombia and a great human being.” Music Trends Colombia, citing El Tiempo, said the aircraft was destroyed by fire after failing to climb properly.
Investigation underway
Authorities said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. More information is expected to be released after the wreckage is examined and preliminary findings are completed.
Jiménez’s death has sent shockwaves through Colombia’s music community, with fans and fellow artists mourning the sudden loss of a voice that had come to define modern regional music in the country.
