A tense moment unfolded at the Bernalillo County courtroom when Alexander Ortiz, accused of a fatal shooting last year, was attacked by a family member of the victim. The incident occurred when Carlos Lucero, the victim’s uncle, rushed towards Ortiz, tackling him and starting a physical altercation. Another man, Pete Ysasi, joined Lucero, and the situation escalated further when Ortiz’s father also became involved.
Court officers quickly stepped in to break up the fight, and deputies arrested Lucero and Ysasi. Both men were charged with battery and assault but were later released.
CEO Katina Watson of the Second Judicial District Court stated that incidents like this are becoming more common and expressed appreciation for the efforts of the officers who ensured everyone’s safety during the altercation.
Ortiz, who was taken into custody earlier for his alleged involvement in the shooting of his ex-girlfriend, remains at the center of a high-profile case. The police investigation suggested that the relationship between the victim and the accused had been abusive.
