Desperate struggles for food in Gaza amid ongoing conflict

The war in Gaza has created a dire food crisis, with Palestinians enduring severe shortages of basic necessities like flour and bread. Each day, long lines form outside the few bakeries still operating, where people wait for hours just to secure a small amount of food. In a recent tragedy, a stampede at a bakery in Deir el-Balah claimed the lives of two women and a child.

The conflict has devastated vital infrastructure, including flour mills and warehouses, halting local food production. Humanitarian aid is trickling in but is severely limited due to restrictions imposed by Israel. The UN has issued warnings of an impending famine in northern Gaza, where food supplies are nearly nonexistent.

Families in Gaza, especially those in makeshift tents after being displaced by the violence, rely on limited aid and face soaring prices for basic items. The lack of water, fresh produce, and medicine compounds the crisis. In a further blow, UNRWA suspended aid deliveries due to looting, leaving many families like Layla Hamad’s fearing for their survival in a city ravaged by war.
