A high-quality drone video released on Monday has provided a stark aerial view of the chaos that unfolded during the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach, showing one of the suspected gunmen stumbling and falling on a bridge as police moved in to secure the area.
Aerial footage reveals tense moments
The drone footage, captured during the emergency response, shows a suspect losing balance and collapsing on a bridge while police officers surround the location. A civilian is also seen lying on the ground nearby, apparently following safety instructions as sirens and emergency vehicles converge.
The visuals underline the confusion and urgency that marked the immediate aftermath of the attack, with police cordoning off the area and rushing to neutralise the threat.
Deadly attack during Jewish holiday event
At least 15 people were killed and nearly 30 others injured when gunmen opened fire during a Jewish holiday event at Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14, according to Australian authorities. Two police officers were also among those wounded in the attack.
New South Wales Police confirmed that one suspected gunman was shot dead, while the second suspect remains in critical condition under medical care. The entire Bondi Beach area was placed under lockdown as part of a large-scale security operation.
Video verified by Reuters
News agency Reuters verified the authenticity of the drone video by matching buildings, trees and a nearby car park visible in the footage with satellite imagery of the Bondi Beach area. The individuals seen on the bridge were also matched with those shown surrounded by police in other corroborated visuals from the same location.
The date and time of the footage were confirmed using metadata from the original video file, officials said.
Investigation and security measures ongoing
Police said investigations into the motive and sequence of events are ongoing. Authorities are examining whether the attack was planned in advance and if there were any links to extremist groups.
Security has been tightened across Sydney, particularly around public gathering spots and places of worship, as officials assess potential risks and reassure the public.
Meanwhile, support services have been mobilised for victims and their families, as the city continues to grapple with the shock of one of its deadliest recent attacks.
