Dubai once again captivated the world with its New Year’s Eve celebrations, delivering a spectacular blend of performance art, technology and fireworks at the iconic Burj Khalifa to welcome 2026.

What set this year apart was a breathtaking mid-air musical performance that unfolded during the countdown to midnight, elevating Dubai’s reputation for redefining global celebrations.

A conductor in the sky amazes audiences

As thousands gathered around Downtown Dubai, attention turned skyward when Lebanese conductor Yasmina Sabbah appeared suspended high above the Dubai Fountain area. Dressed in a striking red gown with a dramatic flowing train, she conducted an orchestra while airborne — a moment that quickly went viral across social media.

Sabbah, who leads the Firdaus Orchestra and has previously performed in the city during Expo 2020, described the opportunity as both unexpected and deeply moving. She revealed that she accepted the challenge after receiving an email asking whether she could conduct while flying.

As the Burj Khalifa glowed in golden illuminations, her live orchestral performance blended seamlessly with the countdown to 2026, merging music, height and visual drama into one unforgettable moment.

Fireworks and fountain spectacle follow

Once the clock struck midnight, the Burj Khalifa became the centrepiece of a dazzling display of fireworks, LED lights and laser effects, watched by hundreds of thousands in person and millions online. The celebration also featured a 20-minute Dubai Fountain show combining water choreography, fire, music, acrobatics and aerial elements.

The levitating conductor emerged as the defining visual of the night, smoothly transitioning into the midnight pyrotechnics that lit up the world’s tallest tower.

Massive crowds, meticulous planning

Anticipating record footfall, Dubai authorities implemented an extensive traffic and safety plan, including staggered road closures, extended metro hours and free shuttle buses. Multiple public viewing zones with large LED screens were set up across Downtown Dubai to ensure safe and accessible viewing.

More than a one-night celebration

Dubai’s New Year festivities extend beyond December 31, with an eight-day festival around Burj Khalifa and fireworks across more than 40 locations in the UAE, including Burj Al Arab, Atlantis The Palm and Expo City.

By blending live performance art with cutting-edge technology and tradition, Dubai’s 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration reaffirmed why the city continues to set global benchmarks for scale, innovation and spectacle.
