Eight of the nine skiers reported missing after an avalanche near Castle Peak in the Tahoe region have been found dead, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. One skier remains unaccounted for as search operations continue.
The avalanche struck early Tuesday in a backcountry area near Castle Peak, a popular destination for experienced skiers. Rescue teams have been working round the clock amid challenging snow and weather conditions.
Search and rescue efforts continue
According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, eight victims were located during coordinated recovery efforts. Earlier in the operation, six skiers had been found alive, two of whom were taken to hospital for treatment.
“We are still looking for one of the members at this time,” Sheriff Shannan Moon said, adding that teams remain deployed in the area.
Avalanche risk in backcountry terrain
Castle Peak, situated near Lake Tahoe, is known for its steep terrain and attracts off-piste skiing enthusiasts. However, backcountry routes carry significant avalanche risks, especially after heavy snowfall and unstable snowpack conditions.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of families. Officials have urged skiers and hikers to closely monitor avalanche forecasts and adhere to safety advisories.
The tragic incident has cast a sombre mood over the local community, with search teams continuing their efforts in hope of locating the final missing skier.
