Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again triggered intense debate on social media after posting a controversial statement referring to what he calls the “woke mind virus”.
Musk responded to a viral graphic featuring one of his earlier quotes — “I vowed to destroy the woke mind virus” — by writing, “The woke mind virus killed my son.”
The post quickly gained massive attention on X, formerly Twitter, with supporters praising Musk for openly expressing his views while critics accused him of using inflammatory language in discussions surrounding gender identity.
Many interpreted Musk’s remark as a reference to his strained relationship with his transgender daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, formerly known as Xavier. Vivian legally changed her name and gender identity in 2022 and had publicly stated that she no longer wished to be associated with her biological father.
Musk has repeatedly used the phrase “woke mind virus” to criticise what he sees as excessive progressive ideology influencing politics, media, education and corporate culture. He has argued that identity politics, censorship and ideological conformity are increasingly shaping public discourse.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief has also previously claimed he was misled regarding aspects of gender-related medical treatment during the COVID-19 period and has described the experience as personally painful.
The latest post has further intensified ongoing global debates around transgender rights, free speech and political polarisation on social media platforms.
Supporters of Musk described the post as a deeply personal expression of frustration and grief, while critics argued that the language unfairly targeted transgender individuals and contributed to social hostility.
Musk remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in global technology and online discourse, with his comments frequently shaping wider political and cultural conversations
