A brave rescue by firefighters in the United States has won widespread admiration on social media after a video showed a firefighter saving a dog that had fallen into an icy pond.
The incident involved Phoenix, a five-year-old golden retriever, who slipped into the frozen Little Massachaug Pond while walking with his owner. The owner managed to stay on shore and immediately raised the alarm as Phoenix struggled in the middle of the pond.
Swift emergency response
Following the distress call, teams from the Westerly Police Department, Westerly Ambulance Corps, Inc. and Watch Hill Fire Department were rushed to the scene.
Rescuers quickly located Phoenix paddling in the icy water. With no time to lose, one firefighter entered the pond and swam towards the dog.
A moment caught on camera
The now-viral video shows the firefighter calmly approaching Phoenix, who instinctively swam towards his rescuer. The firefighter held onto the dog and then signalled to colleagues, who helped pull both safely back to shore.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the Misquamicut Fire Department confirmed that the rescue was successful.
“Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore and were all doing well when on scene,” the department said.

The heartwarming rescue quickly drew praise from social media users, many of whom lauded the firefighters for risking their own safety to save an animal.
“Responders like you remind us that there is still kindness in the world,” one user commented. Another wrote, “That’s a true hero in my book.” Others thanked the teams for caring deeply about an animal in distress.
Safety check after rescue
After the operation, firefighters involved in the rescue were evaluated for possible hypothermia, given the freezing conditions. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported. It remains unclear whether Phoenix sustained any injuries, though he appeared safe after being brought ashore.
Fire officials praised the teamwork and quick response of all those involved, calling the rescue a reminder of the commitment emergency responders show — not just to people, but to animals as well.
