Virginia: At least five people were injured in a shooting near student residence halls at Virginia State University early Saturday, with one victim reported to be in critical condition.
The incident prompted a campus lockdown as law enforcement officers responded to the area. The lockdown was later lifted, although a significant police presence remained on campus while the investigation continued.
Shooting reported near student housing
According to Virginia State University police, officers responded to the area near the Quad Annexes, which houses students, at around 1.28 am.
Five people were found suffering from gunshot wounds outside the university’s residence halls. All five were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
University officials said one person remained in critical condition, while the other four suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Investigation remains underway
Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
The university urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist investigators.
Officials have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or identified a suspected motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety around university residential areas, particularly as students and staff prepare for the continuation of the academic year.
