Severe flooding triggered by a weather depression in Oman has claimed at least 10 lives, including a Sudanese teacher, as authorities continue rescue and relief operations across affected regions.
Building collapse adds to rising toll
The latest casualty was reported in Wadi Al Ain in the Wilayat of Ibri, where a building collapsed after floodwaters from overflowing wadis entered the area. Police aviation teams transported the victim’s body after it was recovered by rescue personnel.
The incident highlights the destructive impact of sudden flooding in wadis—dry riverbeds that can quickly turn dangerous during heavy rainfall.
Earlier tragedy in Izki
In a separate incident, a child lost their life after being swept away by fast-moving water in a wadi in the Wilayat of Izki, located in Al Dakhiliyah governorate. Emergency teams from the Search and Rescue Department were deployed immediately, but the child’s body was later recovered.
Large-scale rescue and shelter operations
Authorities have intensified response efforts across affected areas. The National Emergency Management Committee stated that coordinated operations are ongoing to protect residents and maintain essential services.
Since the onset of the weather system, a total of 533 people have been provided shelter. Currently, nine shelters are housing 253 individuals, while evacuation and emergency assistance continue in vulnerable zones.
Ongoing vigilance amid extreme weather
Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly around wadis and flood-prone areas, as unpredictable weather conditions persist. Oman frequently experiences such flash floods during seasonal depressions, which can escalate rapidly and pose significant risks.
As rescue teams remain on high alert, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and prioritise public safety.
