In a harrowing case from north Wales, a child permanently lost sight in one eye after deliberately covering it for a prolonged period—psychologists believe it was a trauma response to a life marred by chaos, neglect, and domestic violence.
The child, whose identity is protected, reportedly shielded their eye as a way to “not see the world,” a haunting metaphor for the emotional pain endured at home. This led to a rare condition called Deprivational Amblyopia, caused by a lack of light reaching the eye over time. The condition is irreversible.
A safeguarding report by the North Wales Safeguarding Children’s Board details the child’s early years, spent in deplorable living conditions. There was a persistent lack of food and bedding, a home infested with flies, and repeated police visits due to domestic disturbances. Despite being known to several agencies, the family’s troubling circumstances were downplayed—normalized due to prolonged exposure to the system.
A psychologist’s school-based behaviour plan showed promise, but irregular school attendance undermined its effect. Missed medical appointments—scattered across facilities and poorly tracked due to outdated paper record systems—prevented early intervention. Crucial red flags, including persistent “Was Not Brought” entries, never triggered safeguarding responses.
One consultant ophthalmologist said this was the first such case encountered in 40 years.
Now in care, the child is in school, but the long-term impact remains uncertain. Authorities have since reviewed policies, including missed appointment protocols and the need to digitize health records.
