Veteran actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were discovered dead in their New Mexico residence on Wednesday afternoon following a welfare check prompted by a concerned neighbor. The couple lived just outside Santa Fe, where their bodies were found alongside two surviving dogs and their deceased German shepherd.
Hackman was located in the home’s mudroom, while Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom with pills scattered nearby. Although no foul play is suspected, authorities have labeled the deaths “suspicious” and are conducting a thorough investigation. The exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, but there were initial concerns of carbon monoxide poisoning, though no gas leaks were detected in the home. A search warrant affidavit revealed that Hackman seemed to have fallen suddenly, and both individuals showed obvious signs of death and decomposition.
Known for his Oscar-winning roles in The French Connection (1971) and Unforgiven (1993), Hackman’s death has sparked tributes from directors and fellow actors, with Francis Ford Coppola calling him a “magnificent” talent.
Hackman and Arakawa, who met in the mid-1980s, had resided in their New Mexico home since 2000. Hackman had retreated from the public eye after retiring from acting in the early 2000s.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths as they await further findings.
