A 25-year-old police officer was killed and another seriously injured after being shot while responding to a fraud-related call at a hotel near Stone Mountain in the US state of Georgia on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Officer killed in line of duty

The deceased officer has been identified as Pradeep Tamang, who had joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2025. Born in Nepal, Tamang had moved to the United States about a decade ago and was engaged to be married, police said.

The second officer, David Reed, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised. Authorities said his condition is stable.

Shooting during hotel check

The incident occurred around 7.30 am at a hotel on East Park Place Boulevard. Police said the officers were responding to a complaint related to suspected fraudulent activity linked to a hotel room.

According to investigators, Tamang and Reed approached the room in question and were invited inside by the suspect, Kevin Andrews, 35. Authorities said Andrews opened fire without warning. One of the officers returned fire, injuring the suspect.

All three were taken to nearby hospitals. Tamang later succumbed to his injuries, while Andrews is expected to survive.

Investigation underway

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office will review the case once the investigation is completed.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences to Tamang’s family and praised the officers for their service, while also wishing Reed a speedy recovery.

This marks the first line-of-duty death for the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2026. Authorities said hotel security footage is being reviewed and no additional suspects are believed to be involved.
