Two young students were shot after a gunman opened fire at a California elementary school on Wednesday and later took his own life, according to the local sheriff’s office. The incident took place at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Oroville, California. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea confirmed that his department responded to the emergency alert around 1 p.m. (local time).

The two children who were injured were rushed to the hospital, with one needing air transport. The current condition of the students is not yet known. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, informed Reuters that both students were treated at local hospitals, though she did not have details on their health.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooter had no known connection to the school, which enrolls around 35 students from kindergarten through eighth grade, as reported by ABC News citing Sheriff Honea. After the shooting, students were moved to a nearby church where they could be reunited with their families.

In a post on X, Butte County Sheriff confirmed that parents should go to the church for reunification with their children. He also confirmed that the gunman was dead, adding that further details would be shared when available. The shooting took place in Palermo, located roughly 65 miles north of Sacramento. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the events leading up to the incident.
