A gunman who allegedly opened fire near a security checkpoint close to the White House was shot by United States Secret Service officers and later died in hospital on Saturday evening.
According to the Secret Service, the incident occurred near the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House complex.
Gunman opened fire at officers
Officials said the man approached the checkpoint carrying a bag before reportedly pulling out a firearm and firing at officers.
Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, critically injuring the suspect.
The man was later taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.
Bystander also injured
The Secret Service stated that a bystander was struck during the shooting incident, although officials have not yet clarified the severity of the injuries.
Investigators are still determining whether the bystander was hit by the suspect’s gunfire or during the exchange between officers and the attacker.
Law enforcement officials reportedly identified the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been issued a “stay-away order”.
Incident raises fresh security concerns
US President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House during the incident.
The shooting comes weeks after another gun-related incident at a hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which had also triggered a major security response.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into Saturday’s shooting and surrounding circumstances.
