Residents in parts of Amsterdam were evacuated early Thursday after a major fire broke out at the historic Vondelkerk, causing significant damage to the landmark structure.
The fire erupted in the morning hours, prompting emergency services to clear nearby homes as a precaution. Thick smoke and intense flames were seen engulfing sections of the church, alarming residents in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control. Visuals circulating on local media and social platforms showed flames rapidly spreading across the roof and upper sections of the building, while firefighters deployed ladders and hoses to contain the fire.
Authorities said the evacuation was carried out to ensure public safety, as there were concerns about falling debris and the possibility of the fire spreading to nearby buildings.
Fireworks suspected as possible cause
According to local media reports, early indications suggest the fire may have been caused by fireworks. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause, and a detailed investigation is expected once the site is declared safe.
The blaze comes amid heightened scrutiny over fireworks-related incidents following New Year celebrations across parts of Europe, where authorities often report spikes in fire-related emergencies.
Cultural loss sparks concern
Built in 1880, the Vondelkerk is considered an important part of Amsterdam’s architectural and cultural heritage. While it no longer functions as an active church, it is frequently used as an event and cultural space, making the fire a matter of concern for conservationists and city officials alike.
Officials have not yet provided details on the extent of the structural damage or whether anyone was injured. Fire services confirmed that no casualties were reported during the evacuation.
As investigations continue, city authorities have assured residents that safety assessments will be conducted before allowing people to return to their homes.
