Craiova (Romania): An Indian construction worker has been awarded honorary citizenship by the Romanian city of Craiova after risking his life to save a five-year-old girl who fell through the ice of a frozen lake earlier this year.

Vipin Kumar, originally from India and currently working in Romania, was recognised for his extraordinary act of bravery after rescuing the child from the icy waters of a frozen lake at Nicolae Romanescu Park in January. The incident drew widespread attention in Romania and India, with many praising his courage and selfless actions.

The honorary citizenship was formally conferred during a ceremony held on June 4 in the presence of local officials and representatives of the Indian Embassy.

Dramatic rescue at frozen lake

The rescue took place at Nicolae Romanescu Park in Craiova when a five-year-old girl reportedly ventured onto a frozen lake and fell through a thin layer of ice into the freezing water below.

According to reports, Vipin Kumar was taking a walk with a friend nearby when he noticed the child struggling in the icy water.

Without hesitation, Kumar rushed to help. Using a nearby sledge, he attempted to reach the girl across the frozen surface. However, the ice beneath him also gave way, causing him to fall into the freezing lake.

Despite the danger to his own life, Kumar managed to reach the child and hold her above the water, preventing her from drowning while awaiting emergency assistance.

Held child above water for nearly 30 minutes

Witnesses said Kumar remained in the freezing water for nearly 30 minutes, keeping the girl safe until rescue teams arrived at the scene.

The prolonged exposure to sub-zero temperatures posed a serious threat to both the rescuer and the child.

Authorities noted that the girl’s father had also attempted to save her but became trapped amid the broken ice, complicating the rescue efforts.

Emergency personnel eventually reached the scene and safely extracted all those involved.

The incident has since been described by local officials as an act of exceptional courage and humanity.

Both rescued victims treated for hypothermia

Following the rescue, both Kumar and the child were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Medical officials reported that they suffered severe hypothermic shock due to prolonged exposure to the freezing water.

After receiving treatment, both recovered from the ordeal.

The successful rescue was widely covered in Romanian media, with many residents expressing admiration for Kumar’s willingness to risk his life to save a stranger.

The incident also sparked an outpouring of gratitude from the girl’s family and local community members.

Craiova honours Indian hero

Moved by Kumar’s selfless actions, Craiova Mayor Lia Olguta Vasilescu proposed that he be granted the title of Honorary Citizen of Craiova.

The proposal received support from city authorities, recognising the Indian worker’s bravery and humanitarian spirit.

The honour was officially bestowed during a special ceremony held on June 4.

In addition to the honorary title, the city administration announced practical benefits for Kumar, including assistance with an expedited residence permit process.

Local officials said the recognition reflected the city’s appreciation for an individual who demonstrated extraordinary courage in protecting a child’s life.

Ambassador praises act of humanity

India’s Ambassador to Romania, Dr Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, attended the citizenship ceremony and commended Kumar’s actions.

Addressing the gathering, the ambassador said the rescue reflected the values of compassion, service and humanity that are deeply rooted in Indian culture.

He also referred to the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — meaning “The World is One Family” — describing Kumar’s actions as an embodiment of that principle.

According to the ambassador, the construction worker’s bravery had become a symbol of India’s spirit of helping others regardless of nationality or background.

Kumar remains humble despite recognition

Despite receiving international recognition, Kumar remained modest about his actions.

Speaking to Romanian media, he said his only thought at the time was to save the child from the freezing water.

“I just tried to get her out of the water; that’s all I thought about,” he reportedly said.

He also praised the young girl’s courage during the ordeal, noting that she remained remarkably brave despite the frightening situation.

Kumar moved to Romania in June 2025 to work as a construction labourer and had no expectation that his actions would one day make him a local hero.

Viral video earns global admiration

A video of the rescue and subsequent recognition has gone viral on social media, attracting widespread praise from people around the world.

Many users have lauded Kumar’s courage, describing his actions as an inspiring example of selflessness and humanity.

The story has resonated strongly with audiences in both India and Romania, highlighting how acts of bravery can transcend borders and cultures.

Observers have noted that Kumar’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have in a moment of crisis.

Conclusion

Vipin Kumar’s heroic rescue of a five-year-old girl from a frozen lake in Romania has earned him the admiration of two nations and the honour of honorary citizenship in Craiova. His willingness to risk his own life to save a child in danger stands as a remarkable example of courage, compassion and humanity, demonstrating how selfless acts can leave a lasting impact far beyond the moment in which they occur.
