Tehran: A senior officer of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed in an airstrike reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel, just hours after issuing a strong warning about a potential missile “surprise” for Israel.
The Guards confirmed that their spokesperson, Ali Mohammad Naini, was “martyred in a criminal, cowardly terrorist attack by the American-Zionist side at dawn”, escalating tensions in an already volatile Middle East conflict.
Final warning before death
Shortly before his death, Naini had delivered a defiant message challenging claims made by Israeli leadership regarding Iran’s military capabilities.
He dismissed assertions by Benjamin Netanyahu that Iran could no longer enrich uranium or manufacture ballistic missiles. Instead, he insisted that Tehran’s missile programme had reached its “highest levels” despite ongoing hostilities.
“Our missile industry deserves a perfect score… there is no concern in this regard, because even under wartime conditions we continue missile production,” Naini was quoted as saying by Iranian media outlets.
He further warned that Iran had “surprises” in store for its adversaries, adding that the conflict would become “more complex and intense” as it progressed.
Challenge to US naval claims
Naini also took aim at statements by Donald Trump, who had claimed that Iran’s naval capabilities had been significantly weakened.
Mocking the assertion, Naini challenged the United States to deploy its ships into the Persian Gulf, suggesting that Iran remained capable of responding.
“Didn’t Trump say that Iran’s navy has been destroyed? If so, let him send his ships into the Persian Gulf if he dares,” he said.
Strike and rising tensions
Hours after his remarks were reported, the IRGC announced that Naini had been killed in what it described as a coordinated US-Israeli airstrike. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, now entering its third week.
While independent verification of the strike remains limited, the development underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with both sides exchanging strong rhetoric and military actions.
Israel reiterates stance
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has continued to assert that Iran’s strategic capabilities have been severely degraded.
Speaking at a press conference, he claimed that Iran no longer possesses the ability to enrich uranium or produce ballistic missiles.
“After 20 days, I can tell you — Iran today has no ability to enrich uranium and no ability to produce ballistic missiles,” he said, adding that Israeli operations would continue until these capabilities are “crushed”.
He further described Israel as a dominant regional power, stating that Iran was “weaker than ever”.
Conclusion: Conflict intensifies amid strong rhetoric
The killing of a senior IRGC official shortly after issuing a public warning highlights the rapidly escalating nature of the conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
With both sides maintaining aggressive postures and conflicting claims about military capabilities, the situation remains highly volatile. Analysts warn that continued escalation could lead to broader regional instability if diplomatic efforts fail to intervene.
