As Israel’s war on Gaza stretches into its 16th month, millions in Istanbul are expected to rally on New Year’s Day in solidarity with Palestine. Organized by the National Will Platform, which unites 308 civil society organizations, the rally will begin at the Galata Bridge, with the aim of raising awareness about the ongoing suffering of Palestinians.
Ibrahim Beşinci, president of the Turkish Youth Foundation (TÜGVA), emphasized that people cannot enter the new year while innocent lives, particularly women and children, are being lost. He criticized the growing number of pro-Israel posts online, saying the issue of Palestine was not receiving enough attention.
The rally’s message is clear: Israel’s bombing campaign on Gaza, which has resulted in over 50,000 deaths and the destruction of much of the region, must not be ignored. Beşinci stressed that people cannot remain silent in the face of such violence. Thousands attended last year’s rally at the same location, and organizers are hoping for an even larger turnout this year.
Israel’s actions have drawn increasing international condemnation, including war crime charges from the International Criminal Court against Israeli officials. Türkiye, a vocal opponent of Israel’s campaign, has suspended trade relations and applied to join a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
The rally aims to send a strong message to the world and show that people will not stand by as Gaza faces continued destruction.
