The journalist had initially reported that an Iranian ballistic missile struck an open area near Beit Shemesh on March 10, causing no injuries. The report was based on information from rescue services and visual evidence from the scene.
However, shortly after publication, he began receiving emails questioning whether the impact was from a missile or intercepted debris.
Pressure to change facts
Multiple individuals contacted the journalist, urging him to revise the report to state that the projectile had been intercepted. The requests became increasingly persistent, with repeated emails, messages and calls.
Suspicion grew when similar queries emerged across platforms, including social media and messaging apps.
Betting market link uncovered
The journalist later connected the pressure campaign to an online prediction market, where users had placed bets on whether Iran had successfully struck Israel on that date.
According to the platform’s rules, an intercepted missile would not count as a confirmed strike. This meant that the outcome of the bet hinged on how the incident was reported.
More than $14 million had reportedly been wagered on the outcome, increasing the stakes for those involved.
Threats escalate
After refusing to change the report, the journalist began receiving threatening messages, including warnings of harm to his personal safety and references to his family.
Some individuals allegedly offered financial incentives in exchange for altering the report, while others issued direct threats when their demands were ignored.
The journalist has since filed a complaint with the police, who are investigating the matter.
